Inga Beale Named First Female CEO of Lloyd's of London
Lloyd’s of London has named Inga Beale as its chief executive, making her the first female CEO in the market's 325 year history.
Beale takes up her position in January 2014, replacing Richard Ward, Lloyd’s longest-running CEO, who is resigning at the end of this year.
"Lloyd's is already an international leader, but this unique market has an extraordinary opportunity to increase its footprint and to cement its position as the global hub for specialist insurance and reinsurance," says Beale.
Lloyd’s chairman John Nelson says he “absolutely delighted” to have Beale as chief executive.
“She has 30 years’ experience in the insurance industry,” he says. “Her CEO experience, underwriting background, international experience and operational skills, together with her knowledge of the Lloyd's market, make Inga the ideal chief executive for Lloyd's.”
Beale began her insurance career as an underwriter with Prudential prior to a decade-long tenure with GE Insurance Solutions, where she worked in the U.K., Europe and the U.S. She held executive positions with Converium and Zurich in Switzerland, and was most recently group CEO of Lloyd’s managing agent, Canopius Group Ltd.
She was a keynote speaker at the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation’s (IICF) Women in Insurance global conference in June 2013. According to a study released at the conference, women hold only 6% of top executive positions among insurance and reinsurance companies.
Lloyd’s reported a nearly 5% increase in gross written premium in the first half of 2013, although profit dropped slightly due to low investment yields.

Lloyd’s has today reported a profit of £1,379 million for the first six months of 2013.
The financial results reflect a half year characterised by the absence of any major catastrophes. But Lloyd's Chairman and CEO both warned that - midway through the Atlantic windstorm season - there was still potential for this to change before the year is out.
Lloyd’s Chairman, John Nelson, said that apart from the lack of major catastrophe claims, the most notable feature of the 2013 half year results is the fall in investment income returns from 1.2% to 0.5%.
“All large investors – including major insurers – have found it hard to secure meaningful returns in the continuing low interest rate environment,” he said. “Yields at longer maturities have begun to rise in anticipation of tighter monetary policy, but short-term interest rates are likely to remain very low in the near term.”
Chief Executive, Richard Ward, described Lloyd’s as being in “robust financial health”, thanks in part to the market’s central assets: “The strength of central assets enabled the Society to repurchase some £180m of our subordinated debt in May 2013.
“This will bring financial benefit from reduced interest payments in future years without any significant impact on the excellent security we offer."
Dr Ward, who in December will step down as Chief Executive of Lloyd's, took the opportunity to thank his colleagues for their support and praised the Lloyd’s market for its diligence in establishing principles of underwriting discipline
